Finnish jazz drummer, composer and educator Roope Kantonen (1989) is a promising name in the European jazz scene. Started music at the age of 5 by playing classical piano and later on switched into drums, his early studies were at the Conservatory of Turku. Subsequent studies take place in the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he is in his final year of a Bachelors degree in Jazz performance and has studied with Martijn Vink, Lucas van Merwijk, Marcel Serierse, Bart Fermie and many more.
Although his musical focus is mainly in jazz, he has a wide background of various band settings and music styles, such as hiphop, soul, R&B, pop and rock.
Most recently his focus has been on his trio and quintet, and has been busy writing new material. As a sideman he plays with a Dutch pianist Jetse de Jong and a French pianist Martin Joey Dine, with whom he has been touring in Latvia, Switzerland and France.
